The Vilanova de Arousa to Padrón stage is the most unique on the entire Portuguese Way: it includes a boat crossing of the Ría de Arousa and the River Ulla, retracing the legendary Translatio — the journey of the remains of the Apostle Saint James from Palestine to Galicia. This unique experience makes the Spiritual Variant one of the most memorable routes on the Camino.
Our luggage transfer service is essential on this day: while you board in Vilanova de Arousa to sail across the ría, we carry your backpack directly to your accommodation in Padrón or Pontecesures. When you disembark, you only need to walk the final kilometres to your destination.
The disembarkation takes place in Pontecesures, next to the historic Roman bridge over the River Ulla. From there, a short walk takes you to Padrón, where pilgrims from the Spiritual Variant meet those from the classic Portuguese Way. In Padrón you can celebrate this unique stage by tasting the famous peppers and visiting the Church of Santiago.

Reservations must be made by 22:00 on the day before the service. Same-day bookings are not accepted.

We pick up your backpack directly from your accommodation (hostel, hotel, guesthouse) and deliver it to your next accommodation before you arrive.

We cover the 6 main stages of the Portuguese Way from Tui to Santiago de Compostela: Tui→O Porriño, O Porriño→Redondela, Redondela→Pontevedra, Pontevedra→Caldas de Reis, Caldas de Reis→Padrón, and Padrón→Santiago.
